Russell 901
We are restoring Russell, one of the most famous narrow gauge steam engines in the world.
Russell is the only steam locomotive left from the original Welsh Highland Railway.
He has managed to escape the scrapman at least three times, been the subject of a heated debate over his sex and may even have provided the inspiration for a children's TV character.
Russell was in service from 1987 until 2003, but was withdrawn for heavy overhaul. But we're also finishing what we started in the 1980s by returning him to 1906 condition as built - you'd be surprised how many things have been altered in the last century or so......Progress to date: autumn 2010.
So far: we've restored the frames, wheelsets, springs, brake gear and pony trucks. We're working on the motion at the moment.? However, there's still lots to do. You can read the trials and tribulations of the restoration team each week in our blog, Russell901.
There's a gallery of pictures online which we update as often as we can.? And you can also download the latest newsletter: Russell Express Issue 8
